It was inspired by a product from the dynamic seventies in Italy, created by “Premiata Distilleria Liquori G. Fabbri” (now “Fabbri 1905”), and now Nicola Fabbri himself is going from cocktail bar to cocktail bar to tell its story.
It may not be common knowledge that Fabbri 1905, the makers of Amarena Fabbri, started out in 1905 as “Premiata Distilleria Liquori G. Fabbri” when Gennaro Fabbri acquired an old grocery store with wine cellar in Portomaggiore, in the province of Ferrara. The name remains to this day emblazoned on the company’s current headquarters in Bologna, where the former grocer’s moved in 1914.
The company continued with the production of liqueurs, alongside its traditional products like Amarena and other fruit syrups, throughout the economic boom of the post-war era and until the 1970s, when the company decided to focus on its more traditional products and on ingredients for artisan gelato makers and pastry chefs, an industry in which Fabbri 1905 is now a world leader.
As one of Fabbri 1905’s last new liqueurs of the 1970s and a sort of passing of the baton between Premiata Distilleria and today’s Fabbri 1905, MARENDRY was a union of the intensity of a liqueur and the full-bodied notes of Amarena Fabbri.
Today, MARENDRY is back, offering bartenders of the world an authentically Italian, endlessly pleasing bitter able to inspire and add just the right touch to all-new cocktail creations. The recipe maintains its intriguing mix of Amarena cherry and liqueur, but with a fresh, modern flavour given by the delicate aroma of Mediterranean citrus and traditional Ligurian chinotto and a somewhat lighter alcohol content (at 21% ABV).
“We’ve answered a natural question that was being asked by many of our bartender friends around the world, who already love our Amarena and our syrups and other fruit products for cocktails. Now, we’ll be taking MARENDRY to them to tell them a bit about it and about the history of our family and of our nation,” said Nicola Fabbri about the upcoming tour, which is to begin in Bologna on 13 April (after previews in Catania as well as in Romania and Spain) and will, over a two-month period, stop at cities such as Bari, Rome, Rimini and Naples.
The storyteller will be Nicola Fabbri himself, great-grandson of Gennaro Fabbri, traveling from place to place on an unconventional sort of family tour, evoking at once both a vintage and a contemporary feel, as this leading figure from Italian business pays homage to the brightest stars of mixology and to their most loyal fans.
At the various venues throughout the tour, which will go beyond Italy to include countries such as Singapore, Hungary, Greece, Great Britain, Denmark, Cyprus and Germany, Nicola Fabbri will be the feature of a series of Family Meetings: “Conversing over an Aperitif. Guest star: MARENDRY, the vintage bitter”.
Accompanying him will be Alessandro Cattani, a Fabbri 1905 bartender who, together with the local resident bartender, will strive to amaze the cocktail enthusiasts on hand.
